Roots is hiring a Chef Trainer!

We’re looking for a chef trainer who can inspire the next generation of cooks, thrive in a multicultural environment, and create a value based and mission driven workplace




Our executive leadership team is expanding and we are recruiting a Chef Trainer to lead our culinary activities from late August 2023.


Roots is an award winning social enterprise restaurant that has been written up in culinary publications like La Cucina Italiana, Identità Golose, and Food and Wine Italia. Our mission is to empower women and celebrate diversity in our society, and in our restaurant each year 16 migrant women passionate about food and who dream of becoming cooks, take part in a Culinary Training Program while developing a menu that shares flavors from their home countries.


The chef trainer has the responsibility of managing all internal culinary activities to forward this mission with the support of Culinary Director, Jessica Rosval (cuoca dell’anno 2021), Executive Director, Caroline Caporossi, and Program Coordinator, Helen Thompson.



Location: Roots (Via Francesco Selmi 67 Modena Center)

Full-time, 38 hours per week + overtime

Tuesday-Friday: 17:00-23:30

Saturday: 10:30/15 - 17-23:30

Salary commensurate with experience



PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work closely with the Executive Director to create a value based and mission driven workplace

  • Collaborate with the program coordinator to embed learning opportunities into services and to monitor and record trainees’ technical and nontechnical skill development

  • Manage all culinary facilities, administration, and activities from the kitchen brigade, to ensuring HACCP cleanliness and Sicurezza standards, to precise inventory and stock management.

  • Work with the direction of the Culinary Director to implement seasonal menus that reflect the food culture of our trainees that are served in restaurant services as well as private events

OTHER PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS

  • Drivers license and vehicle

  • HACCP Certificate

  • Primo Soccorso Certificate

  • Anti-incendio certificate

  • Speaks and reads basic English

  • Working proficiency Italian

  • Experience volunteering or working with nonprofits
